Alteration Policy

At the Varanid Paradise Booth at events, you’ll often see a sign with a cute monitor lizard holding a pair of pliers offering FREE size-inclusive adjustments if materials and design permit.

That also upholds online!

However, it’s a little more difficult to arrange with e-commerce than talking in person with all the tools of the trade in front of you.

Some designs cannot be enlarged or made smaller. Adding an extension is simple with most of the necklaces offered. Some bracelets need a little extra work, or a sterling silver extension or earring swap will cost extra.

Send a message if you think a piece would need alterations, or request a commission if you see something you like but aren’t sure whether it will fit.

Ethical Use of Reptile Skin and Upcycled Leather

All reptile skin sheds and teeth used in jewelry are resultant of routine shedding from our scaly friends. Some from Liora, and others from friends and my local reptile enthusiast community. No animals will ever be harmed in Varanid Paradise procurement.

Did you know that some reptiles, like croc monitors, shed their TEETH?!

I also frequently use upcycled grain leather in my bead embroidery, so you will have a high-quality piece that lasts nearly forever. Sweat from your neck and wrists also won’t destroy leather the way it would with synthetic material.

I sustainably source small lots of scrap leather from the garment and furniture upholstery industries to get a neat variety of colors and thicknesses: I made bracelets from motorcycle jacket leftovers, and the remnants of a custom upholstery job from a local BMW dealer became earrings.

Rather than wind up in landfills, these scraps are perfect for Varanid Paradise projects. However, if you are opposed to wearing leather, have a leather allergy, or sensory issues, I also have vegan material like Ultrasuede and Portuguese cork on hand if you’d like a custom bead embroidery piece.

Materials

Varanid Paradise strives to offer lead-free and nickel-free jewelry by working with stainless steel, sterling silver, and beads alone as much as possible.

Steel jump rings are our BFF for their strength, beautiful shine, and hypoallergenic properties.

However, sometimes upcycled and vintage pieces may use mystery metals before manufacturers thought to test for nickel. Listings will always note the materials used.

While most of the sparkle rocks are semiprecious stones, newer glass, and Czech and Austrian crystal, sometimes Liora has some interesting vintage stones and cabs in her dragon hoard. Although the quality of vintage glass and lucite is stellar, they may also contain some less welcome materials that have been yeeted from the fine jewelry industry since.

Subsequently, vintage glass components will be “walled” as much as possible on beading foundation or in closed metal bezels, so wearers with sensitive skin can enjoy them in modern times.
